The kitchen in a large single-family home in Newton, MA needed a new look—without undergoing a major remodel or construction project. Painting became the solution, though not without its challenges.
To visually expand the space, a decision was made to go with a simple white paint using Aura by Benjamin Moore.
The first challenge arose when transitioning from dark to light colors. While this can be tricky, it’s manageable with the right primer and careful application. However, things get more complicated when dealing with stained wood surfaces like doors, trim, baseboards, cross beams on the ceiling, and window frames. Most primers don’t adhere well to these surfaces, even with extra preparation.
The solution required meticulous prep work, including extensive sanding. The goal was to sand enough to allow the primer to grip, without removing all the stain and exposing bare wood. Sanding everything down completely would have been extremely time-consuming and unnecessary—unless the project required a full restoration.
As you can see, the stained wood and dark walls were the starting point. To an untrained eye, it may seem like a simple task to paint everything white.
However, the real challenge lays in ensuring that the paint properly ''stick'' and remains durable for years to comes.
Prep work is where the quality, durability, and longevity of any painting job truly come into play. It’s the foundation of a successful project, yet it's often overlooked or neglected in our industry. As a result, the outcome is frequently a mediocre finish.
Without a comprehensive understanding of how different surfaces interact with the paint of your choice, you can’t guarantee results that will stand the test of time or maintain the appearance of a freshly painted surface.
As shown above, all cabinets, countertops, floors, and hardware were carefully protected and covered with plastic. All stained wood has been sanded and is now ready for a specialized synthetic primer—the only type of primer that will properly adhere to these surfaces and create the necessary foundation for paint to stick effectively.
After all the intense prep work and three coats of paint on all wood surfaces, the result speaks for itself. The attempt to create a visually expanded space was successful. Even the old cabinets appear almost new when contrasted against the fresh white paint.
Personally, it never ceases to amaze me how something as simple as paint can completely transform and revitalize a space.
